Cheapest UK Universities for International Students (Graduate Visa Eligible)
If you are comparing the cheapest UK universities for international students, tuition is only the starting point. Most applicants also need a university that can sponsor a Student visa for their nationality, and a route to stay and work afterwards through the Graduate visa, often still called the post-study work visa. This guide lines up published 2026/27 fees, explains what the Graduate Route requires, and shows how much money you must show before you apply.
It is written for readers in Pakistan and India as well as applicants from other countries. It also covers a point many fee lists skip: a low sticker price does not help if the university is not currently accepting applicants from your country.

| Fees, sponsor status and visa rules all shape which UK university is truly affordable. |
Scope: This article covers the United Kingdom only (England, Scotland and Wales), with a focus on full-time taught master's degrees for 2026/27 entry and a short note on undergraduate fees. Fees and rules were checked on 7 November 2026. Northern Ireland and private providers are not covered, and the list is a comparison of selected universities, not a ranking of every UK institution.
Quick answer: On published 2026/27 fees, York St John University, Leeds Trinity University and Wrexham University sit at the bottom of the master's range, at roughly £11,800 to £12,500 for many courses. Queen Margaret University is often searched as a cheap option, but most of its classroom-based master's courses are listed between £18,455 and £19,860.
How the Graduate visa works at low-cost UK universities
The Graduate visa lets eligible graduates stay in the UK to work or look for work, and De Montfort University notes that this can be at any skill level. For applications made before 1 January 2027, bachelor's and master's graduates receive two years. For applications made on or after that date the period is 18 months, while PhD graduates keep three years, as the University of Bath explains.
A master's degree that starts in 2027 will finish after that date, so 18 months is the safe planning assumption. The visa cannot be extended, although some graduates switch to a Skilled Worker visa if they secure eligible sponsored work.
The main conditions to check are these:
- You must be in the UK on a Student visa when you apply, and apply before that visa expires.
- Your university must report to the Home Office that you completed the course successfully. GOV.UK sets this out on its page about the course you studied.
- Your sponsor must be a higher education provider with a track record of compliance, according to immigration law firm Davidson Morris.
- If your course lasts 12 months or less, you generally must study all of it in the UK. If it is longer, you need at least 12 months in the UK, as the University of Manchester describes.
- You need the degree itself. The University of Bristol warns that a diploma or certificate awarded instead of the degree does not qualify.
Nothing in these conditions depends on how much a university charges. A low-cost university qualifies on the same terms as an expensive one, provided it is a licensed sponsor with the right standing and you complete the degree. The Graduate visa application fee is £937 on GOV.UK, plus a healthcare surcharge of £1,552.50 for 18 months, which comes to £2,489.50 per applicant.
Check before you pay a deposit: Confirm that the university appears on the Home Office register of licensed student sponsors with a track record. GOV.UK's Graduate visa guidance points applicants to this register.
Cheapest UK universities for master's degrees, 2026/27
The table lists annual tuition for full-time, on-campus master's study in pounds sterling. Fees differ by course, and a September 2027 start may carry a 2027/28 fee, so treat these as a starting point for your own shortlist.
| University | Published fee | Source |
|---|---|---|
| York St John University | £11,800 for many master's courses | University course page |
| Leeds Trinity University | £12,000 to £15,000 | University fees page |
| Wrexham University | £12,500 for MA and MSc, £13,000 for MBA | University fees page |
| Birmingham Newman University | From £13,500 | Complete University Guide, July 2026 |
| Edge Hill University | From £15,000 | Complete University Guide, July 2026 |
| University of Chester | From £15,500 | Complete University Guide, July 2026 |
| University of Bradford | £15,700 for classroom-based courses | Complete University Guide, July 2026 |
| Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh | £18,455 to £19,860 for most classroom-based courses | University 2026/27 fee table |
The Complete University Guide compared universities that appear in its league tables, so other low-fee institutions may exist outside its list. Always confirm the figure for your exact course on the university's own page.
Wrexham University international tuition fees
Wrexham University lists £11,750 for international undergraduate courses, £12,500 for MA and MSc courses and £13,000 for the MBA for 2026/27. The university states that these amounts cover tuition only, and that undergraduate fees stay the same for the whole degree.
The Complete University Guide adds that Wrexham's master's fee has not changed since 2023, and that an MSc with the Advanced Practice placement costs £3,500 more. If you want the work placement, budget for the higher figure.
Queen Margaret University international fees
Queen Margaret University (QMU) in Edinburgh is frequently named in cheap-university searches, but its own 2026/27 table tells a different story for master's study. Business Analytics, International Management and Leadership and Arts, Festival and Cultural Management are listed at £18,455, Global Health and Public Health at £19,860, and pre-registration healthcare courses at £22,970. A few arts therapy courses are lower, at £16,725 to £17,225.
QMU does run a competitive scholarship for self-funded new international students on programmes with an international fee above £12,500, as its scholarship page states. Third-party scholarship listings put the award at £3,000 as a first-year fee discount, which would bring an £18,455 course to £15,455 if awarded. It is not guaranteed, so do not plan your budget around it until you have the award letter.
York St John and Leeds Trinity
York St John lists £11,800 for 2026/27 on many of its master's pages, including MA Creative Writing and MSc International Business. Some routes cost more: its Strategic Digital Marketing course with a year in industry is listed at £15,400. It also teaches some courses at a London campus, which matters for the visa funds calculation explained below.
Leeds Trinity publishes £12,000 for MA Childhood and Education and £15,000 for MSc Business Analytics. Course choice moves the price by several thousand pounds here, so compare like with like.
Undergraduate fees: what could be confirmed
For bachelor's degrees, this article confirmed only Wrexham's £11,750 from an official source. If you are looking at undergraduate study, open each university's undergraduate fee page and ask whether the fee is fixed for the whole degree, as Wrexham states for its courses.
The real budget: funds you must show and visa costs

| Planning your university finances together can make studying in the UK more manageable. Estimate tuition fees, accommodation, living costs and other expenses before starting your studies. |
Tuition is one part of what you pay and prove. These are the main government-set items for a Student visa:
- Student visa fee: £558.
- Immigration Health Surcharge: £776 per year of visa, paid up front with the application.
- Living costs to show: From 30 November 2026, the monthly amount outside London rises from £1,171 to £1,203. For London it rises from £1,529 to £1,570. Both are counted for up to nine months, so £10,827 outside London and £14,130 in London.
You show first-year tuition plus the living-cost amount. Any deposit already paid to the university can normally be deducted from the tuition part. The examples below use the outside-London figure.
| Example course | First-year tuition | Funds to show |
|---|---|---|
| York St John, MSc International Business | £11,800 | £22,627 |
| Leeds Trinity, MA Childhood and Education | £12,000 | £22,827 |
| Wrexham, MA or MSc | £12,500 | £23,327 |
| QMU, MSc Business Analytics | £18,455 | £29,282 |
Assumes study outside London, an application on or after 30 November 2026 and no deposit deducted. The visa fee and health surcharge are extra. If a course is taught at a London campus, use the London amount instead, which would raise the York St John example to £25,930. The funds figure is the Home Office minimum to show, not a forecast of what you will spend, and real rent and food costs vary by city and lifestyle.
Cheapest UK universities for Pakistani and Indian students: what is different
Tuition itself generally does not depend on your passport. York St John, for example, says its international fee applies to all students living outside the UK. What does differ is how easy it is to get a sponsored place and a visa.
Since 1 June 2026, sponsors must keep their visa refusal rate under 5 per cent, achieve at least 95 per cent enrolment, and meet a completion rate of 85 per cent that rises to 90 per cent from June 2027. A university that risks breaching these limits has a strong reason to screen applicants from high-refusal countries more tightly.
The Financial Times reported refusal rates of 18 per cent for Pakistani applicants. Several universities, including Chester, Sunderland and Coventry, reportedly suspended recruitment from Pakistan in late 2025, and Derby paused applications from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Policies change by course and intake, so these reports show a pattern to ask about, not a current list of closed doors.
A Financial Times analysis of Home Office data, as reported by Khaama Press, found that 40.9 per cent of Pakistani study visa applications were withdrawn in the first half of 2026, against 5.2 per cent for India. Those are withdrawals, not refusals, but they show why Pakistani applicants should expect closer checks. Indian applicants face the same sponsor rules, yet the same report notes that restrictions vary by institution and are not a blanket ban for any nationality.
In practice, this means the cheapest university is not always the best choice for a low budget. A slightly dearer university that clearly accepts applicants from your country, and explains its screening, can be safer than a cheaper one that cancels your application late.
How to build your shortlist in six steps
- Fix your course type and subject first, because fees vary far more by subject than by university.
- Take the fee from the university's own page for your intake year, and note whether it is fixed or can rise.
- Check that the university is a licensed sponsor with a track record, and that your course leads to a degree rather than a diploma or certificate.
- Email the admissions or international office and ask in writing whether applications from your country are open for your intake.
- Add the visa fee, health surcharge and living-cost funds, using the London amount if the campus is in London.
- Subtract scholarships only when they are confirmed, and read any conditions, since many require you to be self-funded. Birmingham Newman's International Excellence Scholarship, for example, is reported to cut its £13,500 master's fee to £8,000.
Frequently asked questions
Does a cheaper university lower my chance of a Graduate visa?
The published conditions depend on your sponsor's status, your course, your completion and your timing, not on the fee. That said, the Home Office decides every application individually, and nothing here guarantees approval.
Will I get two years or 18 months?
The date of your Graduate visa application decides it. Applications on or after 1 January 2027 receive 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates, so a student starting a master's in 2027 should plan for 18 months.
Will the international student levy raise my fees?
Universities UK explains that the levy is £925 per international student per year, charged to higher education providers in England from August 2028. Students do not pay it directly, and it is not a visa fee. Whether universities pass some of the cost into tuition has not been settled, so treat fees for later years as uncertain.
Your next step
Choose three universities from the table that offer your subject, and open each official fee page for your intake. Email each admissions team three questions: is your fee fixed, are applications from your country open, and does the course lead to a master's degree. Then use the funds table above to work out the full amount you must show, so you know your real low-budget figure before you pay a deposit.
